Two days Somaliland Energy Sector Workshop which was jointly organized by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, USAID, UKaid opened on Saturday in the port city of Berbera.

The two days’ energy sector aims to provide a consultative podium for participants to come up with ways of Improving the provision of cheap power supply in quantity and quality through the promotion of alternative energy paths that kindle sustained socio-economic growth rates and improved well-being of all Somaliland citizens in form of increased availability and reliability of affordable electricity supply.

Hon Hussein Abdi Dualeh, the Minister of Energy and Minerals speaking during the opening of the two days’ workshop said, “The aim of this workshop to discuss and consult local stakeholders who wish to advance reliable, sustainable, scaled generation and distribution of energy and also to foster an effective management and coordination of the energy sector development, implement higher efficiency for sustainable growth, and increase public access to cheap and quality electricity supply in the country.

The Energy Minister added, “More needs to be done on the part of Independent Power Producers (IPPs)of whom are entrusted with the responsibility to deliver efficient power supply services to the nation must work more efficiently in order to respond effectively to the changing challenges of the growing demand for reliable and sustainable but also affordable energy.

The Mayor of Berbera Mr. Abdi Shakur Idin speaking during the occasion said, “Sustainable economic growth in Somaliland and Berbera depends on affordable and reliable access to electricity.

The Governor of Sahil region has welcomed the efforts of the organizers of the workshop.

The opening day brought together the top officials in Ministry of Energy and Minerals, the Mayor of Berbera, local government officials, INGO’s, representatives of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) who provide service to different areas/zones of Sahil region and the country and the various stake holders in the energy sector.

The two days’ workshop will host relevant discussions engaging all stakeholders to advance this goal of sustainable and affordable energy in Somaliland.
