A Critic of Islam Facing growing criticism, Brandeis University said Tuesday that it had reversed course and would not award an honorary degree to Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a campaigner for women’s rights and a fierce critic of Islam, who has called the religion “a destructive, nihilistic cult of death.”
“We cannot overlook that certain of her past statements are inconsistent with Brandeis University’s core values,” the university said in a statement released eight days after it had announced that Ms. Hirsi Ali and four other people would be honored at its commencement on May 18.
The university said that the president of Brandeis, Frederick M. Lawrence, discussed the matter with Ms. Hirsi Ali on Tuesday, and that she “is welcome to join us on campus in the future to engage in a dialogue.” Universities consider it important to make a distinction between inviting a speaker who may air unpopular or provocative views that the institution does not endorse, and awarding an honorary degree, which is more akin to affirming the body of a recipient’s work.
Attempts to reach Ms. Hirsi Ali late Tuesday by email and telephone were unsuccessful.
At first, it was bloggers who noted and criticized the plan to honor Ms. Hirsi Ali, a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Within a few days, a Brandeis student started an online petition against the decision at Change.org, drawing thousands of signatures. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights and advocacy group, took note, contacting its members though email and social media, and urging them to complain to the university.
On Tuesday, a student newspaper, The Justice, reported on the controversy, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations sent a letter to Dr. Lawrence, referring to Ms. Hirsi Ali as a “notorious Islamophobe.”
“She is one of the worst of the worst of the Islam haters in America, not only in America but worldwide,” Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the group, said in an interview on Tuesday. “I don’t assign any ill will to Brandeis. I think they just kind of got fooled a little bit.”
In its statement, Brandeis said, “For all concerned, we regret that we were not aware of” Ms. Hirsi Ali’s record of anti-Islam statements, though those comments have been fairly widely publicized.
“You would think that someone at Brandeis would have learned to use Google,” said Rashid Khalidi, a professor of Arab studies at Columbia University, who said he thought Brandeis had arrived at the right position: not awarding a degree, but welcoming Ms. Hirsi Ali to speak.
Having drawn fire for inviting Ms. Hirsi Ali, Brandeis may now take criticism from other camps, whether for disavowing Ms. Hirsi Ali’s views, or for giving in to Muslim activists.
Even some of Ms. Hirsi Ali’s critics say they understand her hostility to Islam, given her experiences, though they think she goes too far. A native of Somalia, she has written and spoken extensively of her experience as a Muslim girl in East Africa, including undergoing genital cutting, a practice she has vigorously opposed, and her family’s attempts to force her to marry a man against her wishes.
She moved to the Netherlands as a young woman, and she was later elected to the Dutch Parliament. She wrote the screenplay for “Submission,” a 2004 film critical of the treatment of Muslim women. Shortly after its release, the director, Theo van Gogh, was murdered on an Amsterdam street by a radical Islamist, who pinned to the victim’s body a threat to kill Ms. Hirsi Ali as well.
“She has her very real personal story, she has her views, and she’s free to say what she’d like to say,” said Maya Berry, executive director of the Arab American Institute, an advocacy group. “But for an institution like Brandeis to choose to honor someone like this is really disappointing.”
In 2007, Ms. Hirsi Ali gave an interview to The London Evening Standard that was, by her own telling, the most unvarnished public expression of her views to that point, including the “cult of death” comment. She advocated the closing of Islamic schools in the West and said that “violence is inherent in Islam” and that “Islam is the new fascism.”
Later that year, in an interview with the publication Reason, she said, “I think that we are at war with Islam,” and said it must be defeated. “It’s very difficult to even talk about peace now,” she said. “They’re not interested in peace.”
Western leaders like George W. Bush and Tony Blair were striking a very different tone, insisting that they were at war with terrorist factions, not Islam as a whole.
Brandeis said last week that it intended to confer honorary degrees on five recipients, including Ms. Hirsi Ali. One of the recipients is Jill Abramson, the executive editor of The New York Times.

She deserves an honorary degree for taking on Islam and being honest about it. Not all Somalis who leave Islam convert to other religions. Ayaan is an Atheist or perhaps an Anti-theist like Christopher Hitchens.
While some people criticize her for not being honest about immigration stuff, honestly what Somali was absolutely honest about their immigration and past. Many of us have and would again lie to get out of a situation like that. I dont blame her.

Non Muslims are not joining Islam that is actually a statistical lie. Islams numbers are coming from muslims breeding especially in poor countries.
Also, the statistic for the few converts Islam does have is that 75% of them leave Islam in the first 5 years.

The sources I use are the actual Sahih Hadith, the Quran, Tafsiir and also the biographers of the prophet that all muslims at least sunnis agree upon ibn Isaq and ibn hisham.

Islam condemns itself much like the Bible and Torah do. Open your own Quran read it from beginning to end, read the bios of the prophet written by muslims, read the tafsiir, read the hadith and then tell me if people like that could ever live in the 21st century and beyond.
Also, it’s a bit rich to complain about imperialism when Islam was more than willing to colonize large swaths of Africa, Iran, Spain and also parts of Asia, and Eastern Europe. None of these incursions were peaceful. Just like you dont want to give up your beliefs and the beliefs of your forefathers neither did those people but Islam imposed itself on them.

Nlander may Allah guide you, amen! Your arguments are very subjective and selective. You claim that you want hard evidence for things, but you rarely provide hard evidence yourself. The Prophet and his companions fought in just wars according to our religious paradigm! If somehow that makes no sense to your paradigm then that doesn’t make it wrong. What makes yours better? Their wars according to us were wars of self defense in most cases, especially during his time. And even the offensive wars according to us saved much more lives and the examples are many. I will pick just one example that many may not take into account and that is the example of how many lives were protected due to Islams’ code of hygiene alone. Most civilizations have suffered from one plague or another, but Islamic civilization has the distinction of not having that problem especially when you consider how big Islamic states got. From ancient India to ancient China plagues killed millions and of course you know about all the plagues that caused havoc on Europe due to their bad hygiene not long ago.
I don’t have the time to refute you on all your arguments, but I have tried to do so on other posts and admin did not allow me. I don’t know why? I will try briefly. You claim that there is no God, but what is your hard evidence. Simply saying that religion is false, therefore there is no God is irrational. And stop using moral arguments, because if you are a true atheist that is not a realm you should dive into to disprove Allah’s existence.

As for your secular humanism, well, the expirement with secular humanism in it’s modern form in human history has been very brief, but the social consequences have been immense. Secular Europe can no longer produce enough babies to replace its self, so that my friend is a total fail on the most basic of standards let alone all of its other social ills. If the rates keep going they will have more homosexuals than heterosexuals and how sad is that. They will accomplish something that even animals are not stupid enough to do. And you want us to follow their example?!

Atheism is not saying a higher being cannot exist it simply says that the current religious ideas about said being are wrong. Could a higher being exist? Perhaps but how likely is it that it is anything like what mohammed thought up? Pretty weak, self absorbed, jealous, murderous allah. Not very different from the old testament god mohammed was claiming to reform.

It is difficult to try to be neutral when describing the enslavement and rape of Safiyyah. I generally try to let the ahadith speak for themselves, which is bad enough, but I think that the story of Safiyyah needs to be told in a manner that portrays its repulsive nature. Feel free to cross-reference everything that I say with Islamic sources.
After years of virtual stalemate between himself and the Meccan army, Muhammad decided to plunder the Jewish village of Khaybar, to the north of Madinah. Khaybar was a fertile oasis filled with lush palm trees flourishing vegetation. Furthermore, the Jewish inhabitants, many of whom were expelled from Madinah by Muhammad just a few years earlier, were skilled craftsmen with stores of gold and valuable weaponry. Muhammad gathered his troops on the outskirts of the town. Preparing his armies for a surprise raid at dawn, he shouted “When we descend upon their precincts, terrible indeed shall be the morning of those who had been warned!”
With that, Muhammad’s men descended upon the sleeping town, wreaking havoc, cutting palm trees, killing men, and enslaving women. One of the men that was captured was Kinana. Kinana was rumored to have knowledge of the location of a great treasure. Muhammad had his men torture Kinana to learn the treasure’s location, threatening him with death if he refused to disclose it. After finding the treasure, Muhammad had Kinana killed.
As the village lay in defeat, the bloodied and bruised bodies of the dead scattered about the rode, Muhammad had his men tie up the women and force them into sexual slavery. The women, bounded by rope and completely distraught, were screaming, wailing, pulling at their own hair and rubbing their faces in dust. Walking by, Muhammad referred to them as “she devils.” He gave orders to his companions to “chose whatever women they wanted.”
One of those women was 17 year old Safiyyah Bint Huyay. Safiyyah was the daughter of the tribe’s chief. She was also the wife of Kinana, whom Muhammad had tortured and killed earlier. Once Muhammad learned of her status, and of her striking beauty, he ordered her to be reserved for himself. He threw his cloak over her to show that she was his property.
She was cleaned, beautified, and prepared for the pleasure of the 60 year old self proclaimed prophet—the same man who ordered the raiding of her village, the enslavement of her friends, the murder of her father, and the torture and death of her husband.

Anas said, “When Allah’s Apostle invaded Khaibar, we offered the Fajr prayer there (early in the morning) when it was still dark. The Prophet rode and Abu Talha rode too and I was riding behind Abu Talha. The Prophet passed through the lane of Khaibar quickly and my knee was touching the thigh of the Prophet. He uncovered his thigh and I saw the whiteness of the thigh of the Prophet. When he entered the town, he said, ‘Allahu Akbar! Khaibar is ruined. Whenever we approach near a (hostile) nation (to fight) then evil will be the morning of those who have been warned.’ He repeated this thrice. The people came out for their jobs and some of them said, ‘Muhammad (has come).’ (Some of our companions added, ‘With his army.’) We conquered Khaibar, took the captives, and the booty was collected. Dihya came and said, ‘O Allah’s Prophet! Give me a slave girl from the captives.’ The Prophet said, ‘Go and take any slave girl.’ He took Safiya bint Huyai. A man came to the Prophet and said, ‘O Allah’s Apostle! You gave Safiya bint Huyai to Dihya and she is the chief mistress of the tribes of Quraiza and An-Nadir and she befits none but you.’ So the Prophet said, ‘Bring him along with her.’ So Dihya came with her and when the Prophet saw her, he said to Dihya, ‘Take any slave girl other than her from the captives.’” Anas added: “The Prophet then manumitted her and married her.”
Thabit asked Anas, “O Abu Hamza! What did the Prophet pay her (as Mahr)?” He said, “Her self was her Mahr for he manumitted her and then married her.” Anas added, “While on the way, Um Sulaim dressed her for marriage (ceremony) and at night she sent her as a bride to the Prophet. So the Prophet was a bridegroom and he said, ‘Whoever has anything (food) should bring it.’ He spread out a leather sheet (for the food) and some brought dates and others cooking butter. (I think he (Anas) mentioned As-Sawaq). So they prepared a dish of Hais (a kind of meal). And that was Walima (the marriage banquet) of Allah’s Apostle.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 8, Number 367)
Ibn Hisham states:
“Safiyah was born in Medinah. She belonged to the Jewish tribe of Banu ‘I-Nadir. When this tribe was expelled from Medinah in the year 4 A.H, Huyaiy was one of those who settled in the fertile colony of Khaibar together with Kinana ibn al-Rabi’ to whom Safiyah was married a little before the Muslims attacked Khaibar. I know that you tend to jump from a positive atheist to negative atheist according to what suites you at the time. Many if not all atheists do this and I am not surprised. The plausibility of such a flawed creator existing is nil, could there be some sort of mechanism/event that allowed the universe to appear etc perhaps, could that be in any way related to a jealous allah who gets angry when you fail to believe him even though he makes his religion unbelievable by intelligent human beings. Claiming he doesnt need your worship but then threatens you with eternal fire for not doing so etc etc, being pleased at hearing humanity burn while he sits there and listens? How plausible is that?

As for Anthony Flew his arguments are logical fallacies. He believed in intelligent design which has since been debunked by scientists. Also consider what he said about Islam “Flew was particularly hostile to Islam, and said it is “best described in a Marxian way as the uniting and justifying ideology of Arab imperialism.”[22] In a December 2004 interview he said: “I’m thinking of a God very different from the God of the Christian and far and away from the God of Islam, because both are depicted as omnipotent Oriental despots, cosmic Saddam Husseins”.[23]”
Agnostic atheism is just a title that’s there to cover up for logical flaws of being just a positive atheist and nothing else. Being an agnostic is also self refuting, but I will say something about that another time. As for now, just remember that a negative entity plus another negative entity is always negative.
I know the stuff that you listed about Flew before you even did it, but my reason for posting the interview was to get you to understand that the probabilities are stacked against atheism and that the origin of life cannot be attributed to a “lucky chance.”
