The European Union (EU) has warned the Somali federal government against suppressing journalists who report on daily developments to the public. This information was relayed by Nicolas Berlanga, the EU’s envoy to Somalia.
In a post on his Twitter account shortly after holding a meeting with Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre, Berlanga said the EU urges the government to accept criticism as part of a democratic system.
“Criticism is part of the democratic process. Limitation of Freedom of Expression cannot become another pandemic. If journalists neglect information, prison or detention is not an option,” the ambassador quoted the EU’s message to Somalia.
