The tripartite Berbera port development agreement with DP World; Dubai based mega ports operator and Ethiopia is a major diplomatic win for Somaliland and could shift trade and politics across the Horn.

The deal is the biggest foreign direct investment in the country’s history.

Since Abiy Ahmed was sworn in as Ethiopia’s prime minister, he relentlessly pursued quite different approaches than that of his two most recent predecessors and boldly reversed long held policies on both domestic and external front.

As a landlocked country, Abiy’s key policy was to reduce Ethiopia’s heavy dependency on Djibouti, diversify and expand its access to sea to cope the pace of Ethiopia’s booming economic growth.

From geostrategic perspective, Berbera is well positioned to serve the most populated landlocked country in the world.

Although Djibouti’s position as a trade gateway for Ethiopia and the Horn has been strengthened by the construction of the railway between Djibouti’s Daroleh port and Addis Ababa but if the planned Berbera corridor is completed than Somaliland can take its lions share of the business simply because of Berbera’s proximity, it offers the opportunity of connecting to a vast area largely inhabited by ethnic Somali and Oromo’s who constitute the bulk of Ethiopia’s population.

Somaliland will benefit the most from the deal as it will bring much needed jobs and will generate huge government revenues through custom duties whilst making Berbera a regional maritime hub.
