Ayaan Living Hospital

Ayaan Mohamed from Somaliland underwent facial reconstruction surgery at The Wesley Hospital, Brisbane whereby a team of approximately 20, comprising surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and other staff, volunteered their time and services pro bono for surgery led by Wesley Hospital Oral and Maxilliofacial Surgeon Dr. John Arvier and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr David Chin.

Madam Edna Aden also expressed her gratitude to all the staff at Wesley Hospital Oral and Maxilliofacial Surgeon especially Dr. John Arvier and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. David Chin and I also appreciate all those members of Brisbane High-Rise Rotary and Mitchelton Rotary clubs whose support greatly contributed all this possible in the first place and Australian ministry of health for their important role in making the operation a success.

Edan Aden added, “ I would also like to personally thank the 40,000 Australians citizens who were signed the online petition lobby the federal government to change its mind to grant Ms. Ayaan Osman the visa to come to Australia for the operation , once again I say thank you for standing in solidarity with us,

Lastly Madam Edna Aden thanked Somaliland H.E President Ahmed Mohamed Mahmoud Silanyo and Somaliland First lady Amina Sheik Mohamed Jirde for their never ending support during this trying moments.

Ayan was given the all-clear for her discharge from hospital. Louise Arvier and myself excitedly walked Ayan out of her room for the celebratory photo with the Wesley Hospital nurses. What an amazing job they did looking after Ayan and overcoming communication barriers if they arose. After exiting the lift and for what may have been the first time in her adult life, Ayan walked out to meet the world with her face uncovered. At age 25, imagine that! There will be follow-up visits for Ayan to her medical specialists as healing continues.
