A Member of Ethiopia’s largest opposition party UDJ blamed Egypt’s financial assistance to al Shabab militants in Somalia for spreading terrorism in the horn of Africa. According to MP Girma Seifu of the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) party, American aid to Egypt is being diverted to finance terrorists in Somalia as Cairo seeks to weaken Addis Ababa and stop construction of the Ethiopian Dam.

“American taxpayers should demand answers from the Obama administration on why billions of their money is going to a country that funds terrorism in East Africa,” said Mr. Girma. According to a New York Times report on June 6, 2013, several Egyptian government officials were secretly taped discussing ways to increase funding for militants in East Africa in order to destabilze upstream Nile basin countries.

 MP Girma cited several United Nations (UN) weapons Monitoring Group’s evidence that show Egyptian arms support to Somali militants, some of whom have killed western tourists in East Africa. The UN document states that Egypt is also providing “intensive military and ideological training” to al Shabab, the same active group with terrorists like Abu Mansoor Al Amriki who was on FBI’s Most Wanted terror list.
 
The Ethiopian opposition MP said he is calling on all the Ethiopian Diaspora in America to unite and “take legal action” and inform their local US congressmen.
 
The MP also said Egypt and creditors blocking finance for the dam project is a “crime against the poor people of Ethiopia.”  He urged the World Bank (WB) and IMF not to give in to “corrupt”Egyptian lobbyists who are blocking the loans for the Ethiopian mega dam. The official asked the West to help Ethiopia build the infrastructure needed to feed itself instead of making the country forever dependent on food aid.

  2. This is the core issue when it comes to Egypt's foreign policy toward the east African region. Not only Egypt most Arab countries in the middle east have been destabilizing the east African region in order to increase their influence to control the red sea. By supporting Islamism, theses countries tried to increase a Muslim population that spread terror and radicalism in the region killing law abiding Muslim and non Muslim citizens. From the coast of Eritrea to coast of Mombasa Islamic radical groups supported by the middle east oil rich counties are causing havocs in black Africa. The AU must investigate and come up with a resolution of this issue. I think the honorable member of parliament has a good point. I think the public should go out and demonstrate in front of USA embassy in Addis Ababa and the diaspora should demonstrate in new York IMF and World Bank head quarters for their racist stand of supporting Egypt over Ethiopia in connection to dams over the Nile. If the Egyptian want to take the Nile issue to the international stage the Ethiopian public should the same. I hope the honorable member of the parliament spear head

    • I really appreciate the MP for such bold and vital comment and call. It shows political maturity- being opposition party doesn't mean selling the nation's interest and security for the sake of political authority. All Ethiopians must be one for our national interests and reject to be used for any destabilization efforts designed by countries like Egypt and the Arabs. To be muslim doesn't mean Arab. Islam shouldn't be the cover used by such countries to use Somalis and other neighboring countries for their evil agenda. What do Somalis gain from such acts? Mutual respect and cohesion for development come from trust and win win relationship. Ethiopia and Somalia have common culture and people. Somalis shouldn't consider and blame Ethiopia for their internal problems. Its presence is helping the country to regain peace, stability and unity, there by Ethiopia can secure its peace and security from that location. As a result, together with other African countries, Ethiopia is sacrificing to again the goal. Somalia has now its government after 20+ years-that is one achievement but Somalis should contribute and strengthen the process. They shouldn't allow to be used by others to execute their agendas. The sad thing they do not share their pain and sufferings.

  6. Any threat against GRD has to be considered as crossing RED line for any nation that would try to destabilize the country. We are passionate, peaceful, lovely and patriotic people. We must do what we can where we live, ensure the American, European and follow officials support our development vision. Above all, we need to love each other and also our brothers in Somalia; we need to be accommodative than aggressor, work for peace; tackle any challenges diplomatically while preparing our self on defense to ensure economic growth in our beloved country. We must know that we are at the critical moment that we must support GRD.   10. We should not talk about religion here, but politics, and if Egypt is against Ethiopia the people of Ethiopian can resist and defeat when proven guilty. I am sorry that person called him/herself Lalibela hate Islam, did not talk of the subject in discussion. Egypt is for both Islam and Christians in the history of this country, and I don't see why the conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia is labeled to religion.

    I am Muslim and I support Ethiopia right to use the God given waters that follows from its territories.

This is not about religion but geopolitical issues that matter to Egypt's survival. Ethiopia has the right to do anything it wants with its Nile water and Egypt, can cry foul all it wants. At the end of the day, Egypt will win because it has a strategic alliance/ relationship with Israel and Israel is influential in world politics including a say in international financial institutions. Peace with Israel's neighbor Egypt is paramount to Israel and paramount to all of us, yes all of us. The Ethiopian Dam project is Damn from the start.
