HARGEISA, 19 December 2009 (Somalilandpress) – Somaliland coastal guards at Lughaya near the border with Djibouti captured eleven pirates with their small boat and weapons.

The Somaliland’s Interior Minister told the media that the pirates were all from Puntland and have been trying to hijack ships off the Somaliland western coast. The minister said some of them tried to escape but were surrounded by the Somaliland forces. “All of them were arrested, no one managed to escape” said the Minister.

“No, they did not carry out any attacks when they were caught” the minister told to the reporters.

The minister said that it is clear all of them are from the neighboring Somalia’s region of Puntland. He mentioned that after interrogation it is clear that they are from Puntland and planning to carry out operations in the area.

“It looks like they could not make their way because of the heavy winds” said the Minister.

Somaliland has been successful in its operations against the pirates in the past few years. Since last year, a number of pirates have been captured in Berbera and in some other areas of the country. Although the Coastal Guards do not receive any international support but Somaliland government managed to secure its coasts from piracy.

Lughaya is located at the border with Djibouti and this is the first time in the history that pirates try to carry out operations in the area.

  1. Good job, Somaliland Coastal Guards. Keep these menacing pirates out of our territorial waters and keep up the good work.

  2. Somaliland has to call for international media and make a press conference, show to the rest of the World by parading these menaces, let the rest of the World wakeup and see what this poor Somaliland is dealing with on it's own. it;s time for the World communities to come to their sense and support the causes of Somaliland stand for. Which is, democracy, peace and self determination.
Somaliland armied forces, keep up the good jobs. And may Allah be with. Amiin!

  3. Good job, thank you.

Don’t show them mercy. They are merciless mercenaries who consciously decided to make a living by terrorizing innocents.

They have shown time and again that they have no regard to human live and dignity by preying on others and making their lives as difficult as can be made.

Since they don’t understand or are not willing to know, they should be made aware that their actions have consequences and they will be dealt accordingly.

  4. Congratulations to Admiral Hagar & all the Somaliland Coastguard to a fantastic job Very Well Done! From all at Triton International Ltd.

  5. It seems they are going to new waters and getting more desperate, now even the red sea is in danger. Djibouti needs to work with Somaliland coast guards as well as the Yemeni forces. Somaliland is the only entity serious about combating piracy in the region, they showed that again and again.

  6. Now that the livestock trade has resumed and Ethiopian commerce is coming through Berbera, these scum from Puntland and beyond are trying to threaten Berbera and Djibouti. They have two goals, political and financial. Political, to try and embarrass the Somaliland government, they will not succeed, and financial, obviously to get as much as they can. Both aims serve their masters. Somaliland is already working with the NATO task force, it is time that Djibouti and Somaliland forged an alliance to protect their mutual coastline and the Bab-al-Mendab.

  7. Now that the livestock trade has resumed and Ethiopian commerce is steadily coming through Berbera, these pirates from Puntland and beyond wish to threaten the coastline between Berbera and Djibouti. They will not succeed. Their aim is twofold. Political and financial. Political, to try and embarrass the Somaliland govt, they will not succeed. Financial, to get as much as they can, they will not succeed. It is obvious these aims are designed to serve their masters.
Somaliland is already working with the NATO task force, however, it is time Djibouti and Somaliland forged an alliance to safe guard their coastline and protect the Bab-al-Mendab from these thugs.

  8. We must fight all Somaliland enemies like a one; I know that by the will of Allah we can overcome them easily.
