“We believe: that balanced representation of Somaliland women at all levels of government will enhance the process of recognition and good governance of the Republic of Somaliland,” the Nagad statement said.
Nasra Ali Mohamed, the chairwoman of the Somaliland Women’s Association, said that the way the various positions have been distributed so far is one that she is not happy with.Nasra noted that since women made up 50 percent of the voting population, their role needed to be visible.
“Since women make up 50 percent of the voting population, they need real representation, and the early signs we see from the Somaliland government are not consistent with the promises they made during the campaign,” said Nasra.
Nasra said that women deserved to hold high positions in the new government.”It was our expectation from the new government that we should hold the most important positions with directors and advisors,” she added. But she described the role women currently play in Somaliland politics as a positive development.
“We can say that women’s participation in Somaliland’s politics today is in a good place compared to our neighboring countries in Africa, so we can say that Somaliland today has reached a level where women can participate in politics,” said Nasro.Speaking on the issue, President Abdirahman Abdulahi Cirro pointed out that part of their plan was for women to receive their share.”We welcome girls and our program included increasing the proportion of women in the government and the overall structure of Somaliland,” said President Cirro.
Challenges facing Somaliland women
Although in recent times there have been women who have participated in Somaliland politics and held important positions, there are still many challenges.Nasra Ali Mohamed, the chairperson of the Somaliland Women’s Association, pointed out that on the other hand, there are many challenges currently facing women in Somaliland.
She said that tribal and clan-based challenges sometimes hinder some women from holding positions.”There are many things that surround women in Somaliland. For example, when a woman is from the clan of her husband and the clan she is from, the two clash and you see many problems that arise when women are appointed to high positions,” Nasro noted.Nasra stressed that they still have hope that the new government will give women their due role.“We have high hopes for the government, even though it didn’t start out the way we expected,” she added
