The Somaliland Intellectual Organisation (SIO) – Madasha Indheer-Garadka Somaliland – today held a press conference to highlight its policy work and ongoing diplomatic campaign in support of international recognition for Somaliland.
SIO announced the completion and dispatch of 25 diplomatic letters, individually prepared and signed, addressed to selected world leaders and major international institutions. The campaign has been timed to coincide with the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in order to bring Somaliland’s historical, legal, and political case directly to international decision-makers.
The Organisation also expressed its support for the diplomatic efforts of the President of the Republic of Somaliland and called upon Somalilanders at home and abroad—government and opposition alike—to stand together whenever the President represents Somaliland’s national cause internationally.
The press conference also highlighted SIO’s growing body of policy work, including research on Somaliland Recognition; Media and Social Cohesion; National Voter Registration Reform; Climate Change, Drought, and Water Security; Fiscal Expansion; Airspace Sovereignty; and National Airport Policy.
SIO has also proposed four important pieces of national legislation: the Data Protection Act, the Artificial Intelligence Act, the Super Security Act, and the Media Act.
A special appeal was made to Somaliland women around the world, regardless of political affiliation, to unite behind the recognition campaign and use their voices, networks, and influence to bring Somaliland’s case to parliamentarians, political leaders, civil society, and the international media.
Our message today is simple:
Recognition does not belong to the government.
Recognition does not belong to the opposition.
Recognition does not belong to any individual, party, or region.
Recognition belongs to Somaliland.
ONE NATION. ONE CAUSE. ONE VOICE.
THE WORLD MUST HEAR SOMALILAND.
