The Chairman of the Waddani Party in the United States, Mr. Ahmed Nur Abd (Axmed Nuur Cabdi), has commented on a meeting he held with the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ms. Molly Phee. The discussion focused on matters concerning the recognition of Somaliland and the broader situation in the Horn of Africa.
The Chairman stated that the meeting involved an in-depth discussion on the question of Somaliland’s recognition and the growing role of international powers in the region, particularly Turkey.
Ahmed Nur Abd noted that while the U.S. side showed a sufficient understanding of the facts on the ground in the region and the arguments concerning Somaliland, they hoped to see a substantive shift in international policy.
The Chairman highlighted that Turkey continues to place significant emphasis on supporting a centralized Somali government structure, despite Somalia’s prolonged challenges with security, governance, and political stability.
He argued that this approach risks sidelining stable and constructive regional partners, such as Somaliland, which possesses its own peace, functioning institutions, and a maturing democratic process.
The Waddani Party Chairman stressed that the current moment demands a policy rooted in pragmatism and tangible outcomes, rather than adherence to outdated approaches that have contributed little to the Horn of Africa’s long-term stability.
In conclusion, Ahmed Nur Abd stated that unless the role of international powers in the region is reevaluated, the capacity of countries like Turkey to meaningfully contribute to the future peace and stability of the Horn of Africa could be constrained.
