Hargeisa – The Director-General of Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Mohamed Abdurahman Hassan, today presided over the official opening of the Republic’s quarterly National Maritime Security and Development Coordination Meeting.

‎The session, convened by the Ministry’s Maritime Security Office, served as a strategic platform to assess the current maritime security landscape, review development milestones, and facilitate the exchange of operational reports and future plans among key stakeholders.

‎Initiating the proceedings, the newly appointed Director of the Maritime Security Office, Mr. Mohamed Adan Tukaale, alongside Deputy Director Mr. Yahye Mohamed Xanas, outlined their office’s renewed dedication to accelerating maritime initiatives, modernizing security frameworks, and deepening institutional partnerships.

‎Representatives from the EU CAP office, Mr. Bert and Mr. Mahad Ahmed, also addressed the assembly. They reaffirmed the European Union’s steadfast commitment to supporting Somaliland’s technical capacity in maritime security and development.

‎Delivering the keynote address, Director-General Mohamed Abdurahman Hassan underscored the Ministry’s unwavering priority to ensure maritime security, advance pertinent legal frameworks, and foster robust multi-stakeholder cooperation. He emphasized that a secure maritime domain is fundamental to national economic growth, trade expansion, and lasting stability.

‎The meeting featured presentations of critical reports and policy recommendations from a broad spectrum of national stakeholders. These included various government ministries, the Office of the Attorney General, the Office of the Prosecutor General, the Somaliland Police Force, and leading academic institutions providing maritime education.

‎The conclave concluded with a collective resolution to enhance collaborative mechanisms among all maritime actors and ensure a coordinated approach to implementing maritime security legislation. Participants agreed to institutionalize these quarterly consultations to bolster synergy, strategic dialogue, and the continuous advancement of Somaliland’s maritime interests, with the Foreign Ministry’s Maritime Security Office serving as the central coordinating body.
