BURAO — The Somaliland Ministry of Education, Youth and Science has opened a refresher training programme in Burao for 123 primary and intermediate school teachers recruited in 2024 and 2025. The participants come from the Saaxil, Togdheer, Sanaag, Saraar, Daadmadheedh and Badhan regions.

The opening ceremony was attended by Nasra Ahmed Adan, Director of the Ministry’s Teachers Department; Shafici Nur Jama, Chairman of the Togdheer Regional Education Authority; a representative of the ALIGHT organisation; and the teachers taking part in the training.

The three-day training is designed to strengthen participants’ pedagogical knowledge and skills, with particular emphasis on student-centred teaching methods and the teacher competency standards set out in the Somaliland Teacher Competency Framework.

Its overall aim is to equip newly recruited teachers with the essential skills needed to deliver quality education, manage classrooms effectively and support students, using modern teaching approaches.

During the training, teachers will be introduced to modern pedagogy, lesson planning and the setting of learning objectives, classroom management and student discipline, student-centred teaching methods, and continuous assessment of learning.

Officials who spoke at the opening underscored the importance of the training and its role in enhancing the knowledge and skills of new teachers. They noted that teacher quality is the backbone of any effort to provide quality education that responds to students’ needs.
