Somaliland President Holds Landmark Meeting with Former Foreign Ministers to Strengthen National Diplomacy
Hargeisa – In a move underscoring national unity and political foresight, the President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro), convened a historic and strategic consultation today with former Ministers of Foreign Affairs.
The President welcomed seven former Foreign Ministers, lauding them as the architects and tireless champions of Somaliland’s diplomatic and recognition efforts. He expressed his profound honor in meeting these individuals, whom he described as “the veterans of Somaliland’s Foreign Policy and the guiding lights who tirelessly pursued the nation’s international recognition.”
During the meeting, the President personally acknowledged the contributions of all fifteen individuals who have served as Foreign Minister since Somaliland’s restoration of independence—honoring those present, absent, and those who have passed away—for their pivotal roles in advancing the national cause.
This consultative forum, centered on national interest, shared experience, and strategic dialogue, provided a platform for the President to outline the new diplomatic, political, and security phase Somaliland has entered. He emphasized that this critical juncture demands unwavering national unity, solidarity, and an absolute prioritization of the country’s collective interest.
“Inheriting your foundational work has enabled us to build further,” President Cirro stated. “Your efforts paved the way, and by the grace of God, we have now achieved the first recognition, with more anticipated. This is precisely why I sought your counsel today—for both appreciation and shared insight.”
The President reflected that Somaliland’s long-awaited recognition is the fruit of a persistent, society-wide struggle. He affirmed that the nation’s foreign policy remains anchored in the principles of cooperation, mutual respect, and shared benefit.
“Somaliland is not an isolated nation; our doors are open,” he declared. “We welcome all who seek engagement based on mutual interest and goodwill.”
In response, the attending former ministers extended their sincere gratitude to President Cirro for initiating this unprecedented gathering. They commended the step as a testament to his inclusive leadership and the nation’s maturing statecraft, which strengthens public confidence at home and abroad.
The former officials presented concrete recommendations and actionable diplomatic strategies tailored to the current phase, pledging their full solidarity and support to the President and his administration.
Concluding the meeting, President Cirro called on the people of Somaliland to safeguard their hard-won peace and unity. “National cohesion is our strongest weapon—it defends our existence and will secure our future aspirations,” he affirmed.
The landmark consultation sent a powerful message of political unity and strategic continuity, demonstrating the leadership’s commitment to harnessing the nation’s collective wisdom as Somaliland advances on the international stage.
