Hargeisa -The Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the Republic of Somaliland have signed a Cooperation Framework aimed at strengthening inter-ministerial collaboration and advancing environmental protection.
Hargeisa, Somaliland — In a significant move toward institutional coordination and sustainable resource management, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of the Republic of Somaliland have signed a six-point Cooperation Framework Agreement.
Signed by the respective ministers of both ministries, the agreement is designed to strengthen joint working mechanisms and reinforce environmental protection measures. The framework establishes a formal partnership between the two government bodies, ensuring that energy and mineral development activities are conducted in harmony with environmental conservation and climate change mitigation efforts.
The six-point cooperation framework is expected to address key areas of mutual interest, including:
1. Joint environmental oversight of energy and mining operations to minimize ecological damage.
2. Information sharing and coordination between the two ministries on policies and regulations.
3. Capacity building for staff in both ministries on environmental impact assessments and sustainable resource extraction.
4. Integration of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies into energy and mining sector planning.
5. Community engagement and awareness-raising on environmental protection in areas affected by energy and mining activities.
6. Monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
This agreement reflects Somaliland’s growing commitment to balancing economic development in the energy and minerals sector with the urgent need to protect its natural environment and address climate change challenges. By formalizing this partnership, both ministries aim to ensure that future energy and mining projects are conducted responsibly, with due consideration for environmental sustainability and the well-being of local communities.
The signing ceremony was attended by officials from both ministries, who underscored the importance of inter-ministerial collaboration in achieving Somaliland’s long-term development and environmental goals.
