Logo - EUCAP Nestor - png.aREDeFTx6oEUCAP Nestor organized a Maritime Legislation Workshop in Hargeisa, Somaliland in partnership with the Attorney General’s Office from October 24th to 26th.

Thirty-one participants – three of them women- came from the Prosecution Office, the Somaliland Coast Guard and Immigration Department.

The Acting Head of the Field Office Hargeisa, Tiberius Ilie Moldovan, who is also a Legal Adviser chaired the event and welcomed the participants. The Workshop focused on enhancing the cooperation and networking between Somaliland Prosecutors, the Coast Guard and Immigration Departments.

The main topics covered over the three-day gathering were: Introduction and Background information on Maritime legislation; Brief Comparison of Maritime Code of 1989 and 1959; Maritime Jurisdiction; Illegal fishing, Maritime pollution; Piracy; Investigation & Prosecution of maritime cases. Lively discussions took place and participants shared their experiences during the workshop.

All participants were given copies of the commented Penal Code and relevant Maritime Legislation applicable in Somaliland.

Background EUCAP Nestor is a civilian EU mission, under the auspices of the Common Security and Defence Policy, which assists Somalia in strengthening its capacity to ensure maritime security and in particular to fight.
