On 1st February, 2015 in the presence of His Excellency Ambassador, to Somaliland and Somalia, Fabrizio Marcellli, His Excellency vice- Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Somaliland, Mowlid Mohammed and other honorable guests the Director of IPCS Professor Adam Haji-Ali Ahmed officially opened the second International Training on “Introduction to Peace-building and Support Operation for the Civilian Personnel” at the University of Hargeisa.

More importantly, Dr. Abdi Gass, President of the University of Hargeisa, Somaliland, and Prof. Pierdomenico Perata Rector, (represented by Prof. Andrea de GUTTRY, Vice Rector and Director of the International Training Programme for Conflict Management) University of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Italy, signed official memorandum of understanding, viz. Agreement for Cultural, Educational, and Scientific Cooperation. This memorandum facilitate for enhanced cooperation between the two universities in wide range of areas.

 

The University of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Italy, has been a leading center of international training for the last nearly three decades. The training is expected to address the growing demand for civilian personnel in various multilateral peace, political, and security related missions across Africa and beyond. The training will be rendered jointly by international and domestic resource personnel and professionals. It is also stated that the training will cover the topics closely related to peace-building and peace support operations: crisis management operations, peace keeping missions, regional and international institutions legal framework, electoral observation, human rights as well as gender. Like the previous year, the International Training this year attracted trainees from different countries across the world that includes Saudi Arabia, United States, Djibouti, Ethiopia and etc.

As indicated by the distinguished dignitaries, the cooperation between the two universities will lay down the necessary ground for further cooperation between Somaliland and Italy. The training that set to last on 5 February 2015 has highlighted the significant role the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Hargeisa, has been playing in the field of academia, research, and global cooperation. Moreover, since 2008 the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS) has been functioning as a center of knowledge production and think-thank for Somaliland voices.
