MOGADISHU, August 10, 2026 – The Somali Future Council (GMS) has issued a blistering rebuke of the ongoing efforts to install a new Speaker of the House of the People, describing the move as an unconstitutional power-grab by a parliament whose legal mandate officially expired nearly four months ago.
In a strongly worded press release on Monday, the GMS declared that the Federal Parliament’s constitutional term ended on April 14, 2026—rendering it legally defunct and politically impotent to conduct leadership elections or unilaterally extend its own lifespan.
The Council singled out the outgoing President for criticism, accusing him of spearheading the controversial vote as a tactical diversion to consolidate his grip over the country’s fragile transition. According to the GMS, the orchestrated election is part of a calculated strategy to manipulate the upcoming parliamentary and presidential polls, neutralize formidable opponents, and rig the final results well in advance.
“The outgoing President’s handling of this affair lays bare his true intentions for Somalia’s electoral future,” the statement read. “It is a deliberate ploy to capture the electoral commission, sideline competitive candidates, and engineer a pre-determined conclusion.”
Rejecting any notion of unilateral legitimacy, the GMS warned that Somalia’s perennial electoral crises cannot be fixed through executive fiat or backroom deals. The Council insisted that the only sustainable remedy is a comprehensive, cross-party political settlement that restores public confidence through transparent processes and mutually agreed outcomes.
“An expired term cannot give birth to a new term, and a rigged election cannot produce legal validity,” the GMS concluded, urging all stakeholders to reject the current farce and return to dialogue before the country descends further into constitutional chaos.
