Erigavo, Somaliland – The Minister of Water Development of the Republic of Somaliland, Hon. Mohamed Abdimalik Ahmed, has concluded a significant working visit to Erigavo, the capital of the Sanaag region, where he held a pivotal meeting with regional and district officials. The high-level talks focused on assessing the current state of water services and accelerating the implementation of key development projects to address the critical water needs of the community.
The meeting is a key part of the Minister’s broader tour of the eastern regions, which aims to evaluate ongoing projects and reinforce the government’s commitment to ensuring water security for its citizens. During the discussions, the officials conducted an in-depth review of the existing water infrastructure, identifying major challenges and bottlenecks that hinder the delivery of reliable and clean water to the residents of Erigavo. The talks emphasized the need for a coordinated approach and the urgent need for new solutions to improve water access in the area.
This official visit aligns with recent cabinet-level discussions where the Ministry has highlighted the pressing water needs in the eastern regions, noting that the government is actively handling several projects, including the excavation of boreholes and wells . Furthermore, these initiatives are part of a broader national effort to bolster water security, which has also seen support from international partners; for instance, the National Climate Fund recently endorsed a $25.8 million urban water security project that will include towns in Sanaag .
The Minister’s engagement in Erigavo underscores the Somaliland government’s resolve to prioritize water development in the eastern regions. By working directly with local leaders and visiting project sites, the Minister is ensuring that development plans are closely aligned with the needs of the people and that progress is steadily made toward providing sustainable and accessible water for all.
