The Women’s Human Rights, Education & Environment Association (WHEEA) has published an article titled about “The Cost of Backlash; How Roll Backs on Women Rights Deepen Sexual Violence in Somaliland”, a series of consultations with internally displaced women (IDPs), educated girls, and women activists.

During these discussions, participants shared their personal experiences and highlighted key concerns, including violence against women, the lack of sustainable livelihoods, environmental challenges, limited access to education and adult literacy programs, weak economic opportunities, and the underrepresentation of women in decision-making roles.

WHEEA released this statement to raise public awareness of these pressing issues and to amplify the voices of women and girls—particularly those from displaced communities. The association calls on government institutions, community leaders, and partner organizations to take concrete, actionable steps toward protecting women’s rights, promoting women’s empowerment, and strengthening women’s participation across social, economic, and political spheres in Somaliland.
